"In today's digital age, merely having a website isn't enough; it must meet certain standards to serve its purpose. In this article, we aim to uncover the essential features every modern website must embody to stand out and truly resonate with its audience."

1. Background

This article draws on interviews with 61 pigmentation artists who successfully transitioned into the field of powder brows, hair strokes, or lip blushes from other careers. Each artist built their business from scratch. Among these, 48 are from various EU countries, seven from the UK, and six from the US. The research, conducted from 2022 to 2024, includes ongoing projects. Most artists either have their websites, manage them collectively with salon colleagues, or are in the process of website development. Additionally, two professionals from powderbrows.io, a digital branch of the Powderbrows.com Research Center, have reviewed the results and observations of these artists.

This article offers a checklist for starting artists preparing to launch their first brow artist or brow brand website.

2. Checklist of Website properties

Before diving headfirst into content creation, ensuring your website meets each criterion on this checklist is imperative. Prioritize building a strong foundation; it's akin to addressing urgent wounds before aiming for peak performance. Your website should not just exist; it needs to function optimally to support and amplify your content and vision. Remember, a solid foundation is key to building anything that lasts.

The Website has to be Mobile-Optimized

In today's digital world, having a mobile-friendly website is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Google, the leading search engine, heavily emphasizes the mobile compatibility of sites when deciding their ranking.

Google utilizes its "mobile-first indexing," which means it predominantly uses the mobile version of the content for indexing and ranking. Sites that aren't optimized for mobile viewing experience a significant drop in their search engine rankings. This happens because Google aims to enhance user experience, ensuring content is easily accessible and readable on any device, particularly mobiles.

Titles, Headers, and Subheaders

Optimized and clear content structure improves readability and is crucial to search engine rankings.

Google's algorithms prioritize sites with well-structured content. Clearly defined titles and subheadings make it easier for search engines to understand and index a site's content. Sites with consistent and relevant headings rank higher, offering enhanced user experience and clear content delineation.

Swift Loading time - Speed matters

In the fast-paced world of the internet, patience runs thin. A speedy website retains visitors and gets Google's nod of approval.

Page Speed is often considered a  ranking factor in Google's eyes. Faster-loading websites provide a better user experience, decreasing bounce rates. Slow sites are often penalized in search rankings, meaning less visibility and potential traffic.

Make Your Mark with Local SEO

Local SEO ensures your Powder Brows services are visible to those in your vicinity, amplifying footfalls and inquiries.

Google My Business listing acts as your online business card, showing essential details such as location, operating hours, and reviews. Integrating Google Maps with your site and listing your business aids in local searches. When users search for services "near me" or in a particular locality, businesses with optimized local SEO appear prominently, leading to increased local traffic and potential clientele.

Minimal Design or "No Design" Blog

A blog serves as the heart of your content marketing strategy. However, its design should never overshadow the content itself. A blog should prioritize content delivery over flashy designs.

Excessive design elements can distract users, slow loading times, and complicate content discovery. A simple, fast-loading blog ensures users find what they want, enhancing retention and engagement.

All the Basic Analytics is a Must-have Feature

Knowledge is power, and analytics offers insights into your website's performance, user behavior, and content effectiveness.

By understanding your website's traffic patterns, you can refine your content strategy, optimize user experience, and drive conversions. Monitoring metrics like daily visits, user sources, and page interactions provides invaluable data for informed decision-making. Many top website platforms incorporate integrated analytics tools, enabling effortless tracking. Also, when you run campaigns on other platforms, you must get what effect those have on your website.

Interlinking: The Web Within Your Website

Interlinking creates links within your content and guides visitors to related articles or services on your site.

Interlinking helps spread page authority across your site, improving the chances of multiple pages ranking well. It also enhances user experience by providing relevant additional content. Considering the cohesive network of information you're presenting, Google recognizes these internally linked pages as valuable, leading to improved search engine rankings.

Responsive Gallery or Portfolio

For any contemporary artist, digital accessibility is non-negotiable. This makes the role of a responsive gallery paramount. A responsive gallery intuitively aligns visual elements based on the device's screen size, ensuring every pixel of an artist's work is displayed optimally. Such meticulous attention to detail can deeply influence the first impression a potential client or employer forms. It's crucial to remember that most users, often more than half, are likely to access an artist's portfolio via mobile.

Oversized image formats can hinder loading times and frustrate users. An artist's work should flow smoothly, with an intuitive interface enabling users to transition effortlessly between pieces, preserving the user's engagement and the integrity of the showcased work.

Integrated Possibility to Book a Procedure

Artists, particularly those specializing in services like Powder Brows, need to prioritize accessibility and client convenience. An online booking mechanism can be an asset but comes with challenges.

We have discussed the dangers of integrating an actual booking system - do that only when you are sure that you can regularly guarantee that too many times are not available and then become "magically booked" overnight. Therefore at first, an easily accessible contact form is better - rarely, a client interested in the procedure would not wait for your response to her booking attempt through a form.

Testimonials & Reviews Section

Client testimonials are always a good marketing asset in services, particularly in the artistic domain. A dedicated section for client reviews is a testament to an artist's expertise and professionalism. While showcasing one's portfolio can capture attention, genuine feedback from previous clients transforms curiosity into confidence.

To enhance credibility, an artist can consider pairing testimonials with before-and-after visuals. This showcases the transformation and underscores the artist's skills in a real-world context. An authentic and transparent review system can be the linchpin that sways a prospective client's decision, turning site visits into confirmed bookings. You can also add client video testimonials and material that you have used for social media posts.

3. Case for starting right now

Understanding the cost of leads

Since 2023, the perception of a website for artists, particularly in the brow business, has shifted significantly. Initially considered a luxury or a vanity project, websites have become essential tools for attracting inbound leads. The dynamics of digital marketing have evolved, placing websites at the core of a comprehensive online strategy. A well-designed website is a central platform where artists can showcase their work, share their expertise, and directly connect with potential clients. Unlike social media, a website is a controlled environment, free from algorithmic changes that often affect visibility on platforms like Facebook or Instagram.

Rational Analysis of Social Media for Inbound Leads

To understand the effectiveness of social media in generating leads, let’s consider some statistics. For a starting brow artist to convert social media engagement into a paying customer, they need a reach of approximately 3,000 people. However, with the decline in organic reach on these platforms, achieving this number often requires paid advertising. The cost of reaching 3,000 people can range between USD 30-50, influenced by factors like competition, time, and location. This investment is necessary because organic content alone struggles to gain significant traction in social media.

Cost Over a Longer Period

Looking at the long-term costs, the financial implications become more apparent. If a website generates even 1-2 inbound clients per week, the savings compared to investing in social media advertising are substantial. For instance, avoiding a weekly expenditure of USD 30-50 on social media ads translates to monthly savings of USD 240-400. Moreover, as websites rank higher in search engines and attract organic traffic, the potential savings and return on investment significantly increase. Organic leads generated through a website are more cost-effective and often higher in quality, as they come from users actively seeking the services offered.

Organic Reach and SEO Benefits

A key advantage of a website over social media is the potential for organic reach through search engines. By employing SEO strategies, artists can enhance their website's visibility in search results, attracting more visitors without the constant need for paid advertising. SEO involves optimizing website content, improving site speed, ensuring mobile responsiveness, and building quality backlinks. These efforts increase the likelihood of ranking higher in search engine results pages (SERPs), leading to more organic traffic. In the long term, a well-optimized website can become a continuous source of inbound leads, surpassing the reach and effectiveness of social media advertising.

Thus, while social media remains a valuable tool for brand building and engagement, the role of a website in generating inbound leads is increasingly vital. The shift towards digital presence, backed by effective SEO strategies, can yield substantial long-term benefits for artists in the brow business. Using such a strategy, it makes sense for the artist to invest in website development instead of constantly boosting social media.

4. Future trends

Future Trends in Social Media and Digital Marketing

The ongoing changes in social media algorithms and user growth patterns are projected to increase the cost of reaching target demographics. Core updates on platforms like Facebook and Instagram mean that the effectiveness of paid boosts will become more expensive. This trend will likely intensify in densely populated regions and cities with fierce competition. As costs rise, the ability to reach potential clients via social media advertising becomes more challenging and financially demanding, especially for new artists.

Impact of Advertising Among Established Accounts

Many internationally known artists and account owners with large followings who previously relied on organic reach increasingly turn to paid advertising to boost their posts. Despite a significant drop in organic reach across social media platforms, these accounts perform relatively well organically compared to those with fewer followers. When they opt to boost posts that are already performing well organically, the effectiveness of their campaigns often surpasses that of smaller accounts. This creates a competitive disadvantage for newer artists with smaller followings as they struggle to match the reach and impact of more established accounts. The result is a higher cost for reaching the end of the sales funnel, i.e., converting a follower or viewer into a paying customer.

Strategic Advantage of Website and SEO for New Artists

In this challenging scenario, the strategic development of a website and investment in search engine optimization (SEO) can provide a significant advantage for starting artists. By building a strong online presence through a well-optimized website, they can bypass some of the challenges social media advertising poses. SEO involves optimizing various aspects of a website - from content and keywords to mobile-friendliness and loading speed - to rank higher in search engine results. This approach is particularly beneficial because of the following.

  • Targeted Visibility. SEO helps artists appear in search results for specific keywords related to their services, targeting users actively searching for such services.
  • Cost-Effectiveness. Once a website ranks higher in search results, it continues to attract organic traffic without the ongoing cost associated with social media ads.
  • Long-term Benefits. A well-ranked website offers sustainable visibility and lead generation, as opposed to the short-term nature of social media campaigns.

5. Conclusions

In the digital era, simply having a website is not enough; it must embody certain essential features to resonate with the audience truly. Based on interviews with 61 pigmentation artists, this article provides a comprehensive checklist for starting artists launching their first website. Key points include the importance of a mobile-optimized site, given Google's preference for mobile-friendly content, and the need for clear, optimized titles and headers for better search engine rankings.

Speed is crucial; a swift-loading website retains visitors and is favored by Google. Local SEO is vital for visibility in local searches, enhancing footfalls and inquiries. A blog should be easy to manage with minimal design, focusing on content delivery. Basic analytics are essential for understanding website performance and user behavior.

Interlinking within the site improves page authority and user experience, aiding in search engine rankings. A responsive gallery or portfolio is critical for optimistically showcasing an artist's work across different devices. While an integrated booking system is useful, starting with an accessible contact form is advisable to manage client expectations effectively.

Additionally, a testimonials and reviews section adds credibility, with authentic client feedback enhancing the artist's reputation and potentially converting site visits into bookings. This comprehensive approach ensures the website exists and functions optimally, effectively supporting the artist's vision and content.

The real advantage of a website lies in its potential for organic reach through effective SEO strategies. These include optimizing content, enhancing site speed, ensuring mobile responsiveness, and building quality backlinks, all of which contribute to higher search engine rankings and increased organic traffic. Over time, a well-optimized website becomes a more efficient and cost-effective source of inbound leads than social media advertising.

I have to admit I am pretty overwhelmed with all the things a starting artist has to do, and this sometimes just feels crazy to me. I hope that this all works out and my account and brand will get some traction.

It definitely looks intersted because I am in the middle of building a website for myself as an artist and I now see, that this is not so easy at all, as I imagined beforehand.
